A plain explanation of where our numbers come from, what they can and cannot tell you, and how to get something fixed.
Where species data comes from
Species properties (density, Janka hardness, durability class, dimensional stability, workability) are compiled from published wood-technology references, grading-agency documentation, and supplier specification sheets. Values are representative averages; individual boards vary with growth region, moisture content, and grade.
How prices are presented
Price ranges are reference ranges per board foot compiled from publicly listed supplier pricing and reviewed periodically. They are not quotes. Actual pricing depends on grade, width, length, thickness, quantity, treatment, and freight. Use the range to compare species relative to each other, then request quotes for real numbers.
How calculators work
Every calculator shows its inputs and the assumptions behind the result (waste factors, spacing, coverage rates). Results are planning estimates, not engineering documents. Structural questions—spans, loads, fastener schedules—should be confirmed against your local code and, where required, a licensed professional.
Grades and standards
Grade descriptions summarize the published rules of the relevant grading body (NHLA for hardwoods; WWPA, SPIB, and others for softwoods). Summaries are simplified for readability; the grading body's rulebook is the authority when they differ.
Certifications
When a product or species page references FSC or other certifications, that describes the product as offered by a third-party supplier. Lumberama itself is not FSC-certified and does not issue or verify chain-of-custody claims.
Marketplace independence
Lumberama is a platform, not a seller. We are not a party to transactions between buyers and suppliers, and species reference content is not influenced by supplier participation. Vendors shown as verified have completed our identity and business review.
Corrections
If you find an error in a species profile, grade summary, or calculator, email help@lumberama.com with the page link and the source you are working from. Corrections are reviewed and published with the page's updated date.
