Cut List Generator

Reduce material waste and save money. Enter the cuts you need and your stock board length — our optimizer uses a First Fit Decreasing algorithm to pack cuts efficiently and tell you exactly how many boards to buy.

Optimize material usage and generate cut lists

How the Cut List Optimizer Works

The generator uses a First Fit Decreasing (FFD) bin-packing algorithm — one of the most effective methods for optimizing material usage. It sorts your cuts from longest to shortest, then packs each cut into the first board that has enough remaining length. This typically achieves 85-95% material utilization.

When to Use a Cut List Generator

  • Furniture projects — optimize plank usage for table tops, shelves, and frames
  • Deck & fence building — determine exactly how many boards to buy in each length
  • Trim & molding installation — minimize expensive waste on crown, base, and casing
  • Framing — plan stud, joist, and rafter cuts from standard lumber lengths
  • Cabinet making — optimize plywood or hardwood panel cuts

Tips for Minimizing Waste

  1. Account for saw kerf — each cut removes about 1/8" of material from the blade width
  2. Buy mixed lengths — if your supplier offers multiple stock lengths, shorter boards may waste less
  3. Group similar cuts — combining cuts from different project phases can improve optimization
  4. Save offcuts — short leftover pieces can be used for blocking, shims, or small parts
  5. Order 5-10% extra — to cover defects, measurement errors, and mistakes during cutting
