Red Balau Decking
Premium red balau decking boards for residential and commercial projects
Overview
Red Balau decking, also known as "Batu," is one of the hardest and most durable tropical hardwoods available for decking applications. Sourced from sustainably managed forests in Southeast Asia, Red Balau delivers a Janka hardness of 3,075 lbf — putting it in the same performance class as Ipe at a significantly lower price. Its rich dark red to reddish-brown color, Class A fire rating, and natural resistance to rot and insects make it an excellent choice for high-traffic residential and commercial decking installations.

Installation Tips
Pre-drill and countersink all fasteners — Red Balau is extremely hard.
Use stainless steel screws or approved hardwood fasteners.
Allow 1/8" gap between boards for expansion.
Acclimate boards on-site for 5-7 days.
Apply end-sealer to cut ends to prevent checking.
Use carbide-tipped blades — standard blades will dull quickly.
Maintenance
Red Balau requires minimal maintenance. Apply a penetrating hardwood oil annually to maintain the rich red color. Left untreated, it will weather to silver-gray. Clean with mild soap and water annually. Red Balau's extreme density provides excellent structural longevity with virtually no maintenance required.
