Overview

Western Red Cedar decking is the classic choice for beautiful, natural outdoor decking. Its aromatic oils provide natural resistance to rot, decay, and insects without chemical treatment. Cedar is lightweight and easy to work with, making it a favorite for DIY deck builders and professionals alike. Its warm reddish-brown color and distinctive grain pattern create a timeless, inviting deck surface that can be stained, sealed, or left to weather to a natural silver-gray.

Installation Tips

1

No pre-drilling needed in most cases — Cedar is soft enough for direct fastening.

2

Use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized screws to avoid corrosion staining.

3

Allow 1/8" spacing between boards for expansion and drainage.

4

Install bark-side up to minimize cupping.

5

Apply end-sealer to cut ends.

6

Stain or seal within 60 days of installation for best color retention.

Maintenance

Cedar decking should be sealed or stained every 2-3 years to maintain its color and maximize lifespan. If left untreated, Cedar will weather to a silver-gray. Clean annually with a mild wood cleaner. Cedar is softer than hardwoods, so inspect periodically for splinters and sand smooth as needed.
