5/4x6 Decking Boards
Nominal: 5/4x6 · Actual: 1" x 5-1/2"
Dimensions
Lumber is sold by nominal size but the actual dimensions are smaller due to milling and drying.
Overview
5/4x6 (five-quarter by six) is a premium decking profile that provides extra thickness compared to standard 1x6 boards. At 1 inch actual thickness, 5/4 stock offers increased stiffness, improved fastener holding power, and a more substantial feel underfoot. This profile is the standard for pressure-treated and cedar decking, and is increasingly popular for exotic hardwoods where the extra thickness allows wider joist spacing up to 24" on center.
Available Species
Best Uses
- Standard residential decking in pressure-treated and cedar
- Projects requiring wider joist spacing (up to 24" O.C. with hardwoods)
- Elevated decks where added stiffness is beneficial
- High-traffic commercial installations
- Stairs and treads where extra thickness improves safety
Installation Tips
- 1Space boards 3/16" apart for drainage and seasonal movement
- 2Pre-drill all hardwood species; softwoods may be face-screwed directly
- 3Stagger end joints at least 2 joist bays apart
- 4For stairs, overhang treads 1" beyond the riser for a clean look
- 5Allow acclimation time on-site before installation (5-14 days)
Fastener Recommendations
- Hardwoods: Stainless steel screws with pre-drilling
- Softwoods: #8 or #10 coated deck screws, 2-1/2" to 3" length
- Hidden fasteners: All major clip systems are compatible with 5/4 stock
- Composite shims can be used under clips for fine height adjustment
