Wood Finish & Stain Selector Matrix

Not all finishes stick to oily exotics or breathe on tannin-rich cedar. Match your exact wood species and project application to the right chemical coating system.

Critical Species Rule:

Ultra-dense with natural oils. Standard film finishes (polyurethane, paint) will peel within months. Use only specialized exterior penetrating deck oils or let weather silver naturally. Prep Step: Wipe surface thoroughly with acetone or denatured alcohol prior to application to remove surface oils.

Recommended Finish System: Exterior Hardwood Deck Oil (Ipe Oil, Messmer's, Penofin)

Film Characteristics

Deep penetrating exterior trans-oxide pigment oil

UV & Sunlight Resistance

High trans-oxide iron pigments block UV degradation

Water & Liquid Resistance

High water beading without creating a peeling film

Maintenance Schedule

Wash with deck cleaner, dry, and wipe on 1 coat annually

Repairability & Touch-Up

Easiest outdoor maintenance — never peels or blisters

Ideal Applications

Dense exotic hardwoods (Ipe, Cumaru, Garapa) & Cedar/Redwood decking
