Concrete Patio Types

Brushed/broom finish: Most common and affordable. Textured surface provides good traction. Cost: $6-$12 per sq ft (installed). Classic look, very durable.
Stamped concrete: Pressed with patterns that mimic stone, brick, tile, or wood. Wide range of patterns and colors. Cost: $10-$20 per sq ft (installed). Looks like premium materials at a lower cost. Needs periodic sealing.
Stained concrete: Color applied to existing or new concrete. Acid stain: mottled, natural look (earth tones). Water-based stain: more uniform color, wider color range. Cost: $2-$8 per sq ft (staining only). Can be combined with stamping.
Exposed aggregate: Surface concrete washed away to reveal decorative gravel/stone. Natural, textured look. Cost: $8-$15 per sq ft. Good traction, unique appearance.
Polished concrete: Smooth, glossy finish. Modern look, mostly used for covered patios. Cost: $8-$15 per sq ft. Can be slippery when wet (not ideal for open patios).

Cost

By finish (per sq ft, installed): Basic brushed: $6-$12. Stamped: $10-$20. Stained: $8-$15 (new pour). Exposed aggregate: $8-$15. Colored concrete: $8-$14.
By project size (basic brushed, installed): Small (100-200 sq ft): $1,000-$3,000. Medium (200-400 sq ft): $2,000-$5,000. Large (400-800 sq ft): $3,000-$8,000. Extra-large (800+ sq ft): $5,000-$12,000+.
Additional costs: Removal of old patio: $2-$6 per sq ft. Reinforcement (rebar or wire mesh): $0.50-$1.50 per sq ft. Steps: $500-$2,000. Retaining wall: $15-$40 per sq ft. Sealing: $1-$3 per sq ft.
Thickness: Standard: 4 inches for patios. 6 inches if supporting hot tub or heavy loads.

Installation & Maintenance

Installation process: 1. Layout and excavation (6-8 inches). 2. Compact subgrade soil. 3. Add compacted gravel base (4 inches). 4. Set forms (determine shape and edges). 5. Install reinforcement (rebar or wire mesh). 6. Pour concrete. 7. Finish surface (broom, stamp, etc.). 8. Cure (3-7 days, keep moist). 9. Remove forms. 10. Seal (after 28-day cure).
DIY? Small simple patios can be DIY (100-150 sq ft). Larger patios are best left to professionals (concrete must be poured and finished quickly). Stamped concrete requires professional skill.
Maintenance: Seal every 2-3 years (especially stamped). Clean with pressure washer annually. Fill cracks promptly (prevents water infiltration and expansion). Re-stain or reseal as needed.
Common issues: Cracking: most common issue. Control joints help but some cracking is normal. Discoloration: UV and weather can affect color. Sealing helps. Spalling: surface flaking, often from freeze-thaw or improper finishing.
