Southern Yellow Pine Framing
Premium southern yellow pine framing boards for residential and commercial projects
Overview
Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) is the dominant framing species in the southeastern and eastern United States. It is the strongest and hardest of the common framing softwoods, with excellent fastener-holding ability and high bending strength. SYP is also the base species for most pressure-treated lumber, making it uniquely versatile for both interior framing and exterior structural applications.

Installation Tips
SYP can be heavy when green — use KD (kiln-dried) lumber for easier handling
Pre-drill near ends to prevent splitting due to high density
Use SYP for critical structural applications requiring maximum strength
Check for proper grade stamps — #1, #2, or MSR ratings
Allow green SYP to dry before enclosing in walls to prevent mold
Follow span tables specific to SYP — they differ from SPF tables
Maintenance
SYP framing requires no maintenance when enclosed. For exposed applications, SYP must be treated or finished to prevent decay. Green SYP should be dried to 19% moisture content before enclosure. SYP is more prone to checking (surface cracks) during drying than other species.
