Question 1

What is the best wood siding for 2026?

Accepted Answer

Western Red Cedar remains the most popular wood siding choice for its natural beauty and rot resistance. Thermally modified wood is gaining popularity for its stability without chemicals. Accoya offers the best moisture resistance. For premium exteriors, Ipe and Cumaru siding provide unmatched durability.

Question 2

How long does wood siding last?

Accepted Answer

Cedar siding lasts 20-40 years with proper maintenance. Redwood siding lasts 25-40 years. Ipe and hardwood siding can last 40-75 years. Thermally modified siding typically lasts 25-30 years. The key to longevity is proper installation with a rainscreen gap and regular refinishing every 3-7 years.

Question 3

Is wood siding more expensive than vinyl?

Accepted Answer

Yes — wood siding costs $6-20 per square foot installed vs. $3-8 for vinyl. However, wood siding adds more home value, lasts longer with maintenance, and can be refinished rather than replaced. Over a 50-year span, well-maintained wood siding can be comparable in total cost to vinyl.

Question 4

Does wood siding need a rainscreen?

Accepted Answer

A rainscreen gap (3/8 to 3/4 inch) behind wood siding is strongly recommended in all climates. It allows moisture to drain and air to circulate, preventing rot and extending siding life by 50-100%. Many building codes now require rainscreen systems for wood-clad exteriors.
