Standard: WWPA, SPIB, NLGARelative price: EconomyRank: 5

What this grade means

Utility grade is the lowest structural grade with reduced strength values. It is suitable for temporary structures, blocking, and applications where structural integrity is not critical. Not recommended for primary load-bearing members.

Defects allowed

Large knots, significant wane, shake, splits, and other major defects permitted

Typical uses

Temporary bracing, concrete forms, blocking, crating, pallets, non-structural framing

Grade rules vary by species, region and grading agency. For structural work, use the grade stamp and governing code or an engineer’s specification—not appearance alone.
