Softwood Structural

Select Structural

Highest structural softwood grade with maximum strength and minimal defects

Standard: WWPA, SPIB, NLGARelative price: PremiumRank: 1

What this grade means

Select Structural is the highest quality structural grade for softwood dimensional lumber. It allows very few natural characteristics and provides the highest design values for bending strength, stiffness, and compression. Pieces are tight-grained with minimal wane, splits, or knots.

Defects allowed

Very tight knots only, no wane, minimal slope of grain, no shake or splits

Typical uses

Engineered structures, exposed structural framing, high-load headers, long-span joists, critical structural members

Grade rules vary by species, region and grading agency. For structural work, use the grade stamp and governing code or an engineer’s specification—not appearance alone.
