What this grade means

#2 Clear (also called STK — Select Tight Knot) is the most popular retail grade for cedar and redwood. It allows tight, sound knots that add natural character while maintaining good structural integrity and rot resistance.

Defects allowed

Sound tight knots, some sapwood, minor character marks

Typical uses

Decking, fencing, siding, pergolas, garden structures, general outdoor construction

Grade rules vary by species, region and grading agency. For structural work, use the grade stamp and governing code or an engineer’s specification—not appearance alone.
