What this grade means
#1 Common is the most widely used hardwood grade for cabinetry and general woodworking. Boards must yield 66-2/3% clear face cuttings from a minimum 3-inch wide, 4-foot long board. It represents excellent value with enough clear wood for most projects while being significantly less expensive than FAS.
Defects allowed
66%+ clear wood, sound tight knots permitted, minimum board 3" x 4'
Typical uses
Kitchen cabinets, furniture, general woodworking, millwork, flooring, paneling
Grade rules vary by species, region and grading agency. For structural work, use the grade stamp and governing code or an engineer’s specification—not appearance alone.
