Standard: WWPA, SPIB, NLGARelative price: PremiumRank: 2

What this grade means

#1 grade structural lumber is a high-quality grade that provides excellent strength and stiffness values. It allows slightly more natural characteristics than Select Structural but remains a premium structural product suitable for most demanding applications.

Defects allowed

Small sound knots, slight wane, minor checks, tight grain slope

Typical uses

Floor joists, rafters, headers, beams, structural framing where appearance matters

Grade rules vary by species, region and grading agency. For structural work, use the grade stamp and governing code or an engineer’s specification—not appearance alone.
