Expanded polystyrene (EPS) rigid foam board is the most affordable rigid insulation option, providing approximately R-4 per inch. It is the same material used in ICF (insulating concrete form) construction and EIFS exterior systems. EPS is lightweight, easy to cut, and maintains its stated R-value over time without thermal drift.

Key Features

  • R-4 per inch; Most affordable rigid foam; No long-term R-value loss; Lightweight; Used in ICF and EIFS systems

Specifications

R-value: R-3.8 to R-4.2 per inch depending on density. Density: 1-2 lbs/cu ft. Compressive strength: 10-25 PSI. Sizes: 4x8 ft in 1/2 to 4+ inch thickness.

Applications

  • ICF construction; EIFS exterior systems; Under-slab insulation; Exterior wall sheathing; SIP panel cores

Installation Overview

Cut with hot wire or utility knife. Attach with compatible adhesive and mechanical fasteners. Tape joints with approved tape. Must be covered with ignition barrier or thermal barrier per code.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • ✓ Lowest cost rigid foam; Stable R-value over time; Very lightweight; Easy to cut; Versatile applications

Cons

  • ✗ Lower R-value per inch than XPS; Higher moisture absorption than XPS; Beaded surface harder to tape; Less compressive strength; Crumbles when cut with knife

Benchmark Foam

Code Requirements

Must meet ASTM C578. Thermal barrier or ignition barrier per IRC R316. Below-grade use permitted but XPS is preferred for moisture resistance.

Buying Tips

EPS is the best value for above-grade applications where moisture is managed. Higher-density EPS (Type II or IX) offers better moisture resistance and R-value. Consider for large-area coverage where cost is critical.
