Understanding Wood Moisture Content: Why It Matters
Moisture content is the single most important factor in preventing wood failures. Here's everything contractors and homeowners need to know.

Wood is hygroscopic — it constantly absorbs and releases moisture to reach equilibrium with its environment. When wood is installed at a moisture content that doesn't match its final environment, problems are guaranteed. Understanding and managing moisture content (MC) is the difference between a project that lasts decades and one that fails in months.
Ideal MC Ranges by Application
Interior Flooring & Furniture
Ideal for heated indoor environments. Wood at this MC is stable and ready for fine interior work.
General Interior Use
Suitable for trim, cabinetry, and most interior applications where climate is controlled.
Exterior Protected
Acceptable for covered porches, soffits, and protected exterior applications.
"Green" Lumber
Must be dried before use. Common for framing lumber that will be enclosed behind walls.
Problems Caused by Incorrect Moisture
Cupping & Crowning
Flooring boards curve up at edges (cupping) or center (crowning) as moisture distributes unevenly.
Warping & Twisting
Boards deform from flat due to uneven drying, making installation difficult or impossible.
Gaps & Cracks
Wood shrinks as it loses moisture, creating visible gaps between boards and end-grain checking.
Mold & Decay
Excess moisture above 20% creates conditions for mold growth and fungal decay organisms.
Finish Failure
Stains, paints, and sealers won't adhere properly to wood with excessive moisture content.
Best Practices for Managing MC
- Always acclimate lumber 7–14 days in the installation environment before use
- Use a pin or pinless moisture meter to verify MC before installation
- Store lumber off the ground on stickers with good airflow
- Specify kiln-dried (KD) lumber for interior projects — target 6–8% MC
- For exterior projects, allow wood to reach equilibrium with outdoor conditions
- Seal end grain immediately upon delivery to slow moisture loss and prevent checking
